Transport Flag - Fuel Free Fridays

Presentation School’s Fuel Free Friday

The pupils, staff and parents of Presentation School Fermoy are starting their new term on a Healthy note. On Friday April 28th our First Fuel Free Friday was launched with great fanfare and aplomb. Families were asked to walk or park n’stride on that day. A band of Hi-vis clad walking warriors armed with banners and balloons marched to Presentation from all corners of Fermoy. Parents availed of park n stride locations at the town park, the library car park and from the new Texaco Service Station on Cork Road. We would like to extent a huge thank you to the staff and management of Texaco for allowing us to park there. The walk to school was a memorable one with all the children singing songs and chanting slogans.

On arrival to school the pupils were met by our own cheerleading squad who awarded stickers to the weary walkers. The atmosphere in the yard was nothing short of electric. All the pupils from Juniors to Sixth class filed into the hall. The sixth class performed raps and led us in a selection of travel themed dance routines. Sarah Quinn was awarded first prize in the slogan competition for her catchy phrase, 'Keep the earth at it's peak... walk to school once a week!!! The standard was so high that eleven other certificates were awarded to budding writers. Mrs Kiely our lovely principal thanked the Green Schools Committee for all their hard work. She commended the pupils on the extraordinary effort they had made to walk or car pool to school. In some classes, 98% walked to school. She urged us all to keep up the great work, even on other days of the week!!!! Mrs Dillon the Green Schools co coordinator unveiled the prestigious golden boot which will be awarded to the class who makes the greatest effort to ditch the car!!!!
Hans Van de Ven , an Taisce Travel officer also spoke outlying the importance of reducing car congestion and improving air quality. After some more travel themed disco anthems the pupils returned to their class for a healthy breakfast picnic. We would like to thank Michael Riordan of Riordans supervalu fermoy for kindly sponsoring the fruit.
We are hoping to continue with our Fuel Free Fridays initiative for four weeks in total (28th April, May 5th, 12th and 19th). Under An Taisce's Green Schools Programme, our school has already been awarded three Green Flags for our "Litter and Waste", "Energy" and "Water " projects. This is a tremendous achievement of which we are very proud. The school is now working towards earning its fouth flag - the travel flag. We hope that the parents and pupils will continue to embrace the benefits of walking, car pooling and park n striding in the ensuing weeks and months.
